Apple Ads Share of Voice: why tracking the top 50 auction positions changes the story (ConsultMyApp)

ConsultMyApp argues that ‘top 2 visible ads’ reporting is basically screenshot monitoring. Real Apple Ads SoV needs the top 50 auction stack, because ranks 3 to 50 still rotate into delivery and reveal competitor moves earlier.

ConsultMyApp makes a clean point that a lot of Apple Search Ads “share of voice” tooling quietly sidesteps: if you only look at the ads you can see on a device, you are measuring screen presence, not the market.

The one-line lesson

If your SoV report only tracks the two visible ad slots, it will over-credit the leaders and under-detect the challengers. The “missing” impressions get incorrectly shoved onto whichever apps happened to be visible.

What stood out

  • Auction position is not a fixed seat number. It shifts by user and over time, so apps below the visible line can still surface.
  • Ranks 3 to 50 are a meaningful competitive tail. Small probabilities add up, and they are where you spot “competitor is gearing up” before they reliably show up in the first two visible slots.
  • The practical implication is early warning. An app moving from rank ~30 to rank ~6 might be invisible in a basic screenshot monitor, but it is already becoming a real paid competitor.

Why this matters (practically)

Two common failure modes:

  1. You think the market is concentrated, because your report keeps showing the same two apps.
  2. You miss the rising bidders, because they start in the tail, not at the front.

Tiny win (30 minutes)

Pick 5 high-value keywords and ask your team (or vendor) one blunt question:

  • “Do we track at least the top 50 auction positions, or just the visible ads?”

If the answer is “visible only”, treat SoV as a rough screenshot signal, and do not make budget or competitive calls off it alone.
