How metadata impacts Apple Ads auction position (ConsultMyApp)
A credited summary of ConsultMyApp’s APPlyzer study on what actually correlates with better Apple Ads (Search Results) auction ranks. The punchline: title relevance shows a robust relationship with auction position, while screenshots and CPP usage are more tangled up with bid and performance.
ConsultMyApp published a data-heavy piece on a question most teams quietly assume they already know the answer to: does App Store listing “relevance” (metadata, screenshots, CPPs) actually show up in Apple Ads auction position, or is it mostly bid and brand?

The one-line lesson
Treat your title as an Apple Ads performance lever (not just an ASO lever), and treat CPPs as a conversion tool, not a free auction-rank boost.
What they did (in plain English)
- Analysed 56,063 Apple Ads auction-position observations (full stacks, not just visible slots), and audited 1,910 screenshots.
- Scored title, subtitle, long description, screenshots, and CPP usage against the keyword being auctioned.
- Controlled for app, keyword, and time to reduce “good advertisers do everything well” bias.
What stood out
- Title relevance survived the statistical washing machine. In their fixed-effect model, a 10-point increase in metadata relevance aligned with a ~3.44-position improvement in auction rank, and the title did most of that work.
- Screenshots looked important until you control for who the advertiser is. Screenshot relevance correlated strongly in the raw data, but the adjusted effect shrank and wasn’t statistically reliable in their setup.
- CPPs show up strongly in raw auction rank, but that’s not proof of a direct rank bonus. CPP-active observations tended to sit much higher in the auction stack, but they’re explicit that this could be bid + quality + conversion effects (and advertiser sophistication), rather than Apple giving CPPs a special “boost”.
Why this matters (practically)
If you are running Apple Ads on broad or ambiguous keywords, this reframes the work:
- The title is doing more than “organic match”, it is part of the relevance story that can shape paid eligibility and competitive position.
- CPPs are still worth it, but the win is mainly via better tap-through and conversion, which then improves effective outcomes (and may indirectly support better delivery).
Tiny win (30 minutes)
Pick one expensive head term and do three checks:
- Title match: does your title clearly contain (or strongly imply) the query theme, without feeling spammy?
- CPP mapping: do you have a CPP that actually disambiguates intent (not just a screenshot swap)?
- Auction reality check: if you track ranks beyond the visible ads, are you climbing, or are you just changing creative while staying stuck in the same band?
